The International Energy Agency has warned that clean energy progress is “far too slow” to put global emissions into sustained decline towards net-zero. The Paris-based organization made this announcement during the release of its World Energy Outlook 2021. The IEA’s new World Energy Outlook makes it clear that countries’ efforts to move to fully green energy production and consumption are still far too slow to meet their zero-net emission goal and fight global warming.
The report described how a “rapid but uneven economic recovery from last year’s Covid?induced recession” had put huge pressure on the energy market. This had led to “sharp price rises in natural gas, coal and electricity markets.”
“For all the advances being made by renewables and electric mobility, 2021 is seeing a large rebound in coal and oil use,” the IEA says. “Largely for this reason, it is also seeing the second?largest annual increase in CO2 emissions in history.”
The report is designed as a handbook for the COP26 Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, which will be held in November. The Conference offers a critical opportunity to put a focus on acceleration of climate actions and the global clean energy transition.
What are the two scenarios?
The IEA analyzed two possible scenarios in their report. The first scenario looks at the measures and policies that governments have already put in place. Despite the measures, the annual worldwide emissions would still be the same as developing countries build up their infrastructure. Under this scenario, the temperature will go up by 2.6 C in 2100.
The second scenario looks at governments’ pledges to achieve net-zero emissions, potentially doubling clean energy investment over the next decade. If countries manage to implement these changes in time, the global average temperature increase would be around 2.1 C by the year 2100, still well above the 1.5 C agreed under the Paris Agreement.
UK to invest more in green energy production
Boris Johnson had confirmed the government’s plan for Britain’s electricity to come from only renewable sources by 2035. The government will increase investments in renewable and nuclear energy in order to move away from the use of fossil fuels. The Business and Energy secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said: “The more I look at this, I think nuclear has to be part of the solution”. “What we need to do in this country is have a cheap, affordable system, something that’s sustainable, and something which we can rely on ourselves, which protects us from the vagaries of international price movements.”
Kwasi Kwarteng has revealed that the government is working on a strategy for the country to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, as well as a long-awaited plan on how to decarbonize the country’s heating supply.
